Description

Accession: 95-76-K Uniform, Working Khaki, Aviation Midshipman, Jacket 32 H" x 18" W

Jacket was worn in 1948-1949 by donor. Jacket has insignia of the Aviation Midshipman and shoulder boards for a midshipman first class.

The development of Aviation Midshipman was authorized by Congress in 1946 and was a remedy for the shortage of skilled aviators after the end of World War II . The plan devised by VADM James L Holloway Jr. sort to fill the personnel gap by encouraging high school graduates and those already in flight training who were soon to be released to become midshipmen. Between 1946 and 1950 3,600 men joined up as Midshipmen.
