At Today’s Business, our TB University (Internship) Program has continued to help us recruit future employees and educate college students about this growing industry we all love. We have had hundreds of students pass through our program, and love being able to teach students about the ins and outs of Today’s Business and the digital marketing world. As one of our major recruiting tools, we are always keeping an eye out for top talent. But what does it take to be a top intern at Today’s Business?

Be on Time and Prepared

Make a good first impression. Always confirm the time and place of orientation and training days. This is your first chance to meet our team, and for the team to meet you. You never get a second chance to make a good first impression. My next piece of cliché advice- it’s always better to be over dressed than under dressed. While you may have seen video of our executives riding around on an IO Hawk and playing ping-pong, TB Headquarters is still a professional work environment (except during the Ping Pong World Cup, which we take very seriously).

Ask Questions

Assigned a task, but not sure what to do? Ask! We don’t bite. We prefer our interns to ask a million questions until they feel comfortable. We much rather you ask than do something that is less than your best work.

We also encourage our interns to ask us about any part of our business, even if it’s not directly related to your internship. We want you to learn as much as possible while you’re here, so if you’re curious about one of our services, how we got started, job opportunities, or the industry in general, we’d love to talk with you!

Follow Directions

It sounds simple, but we all know interns want to impress! We always appreciate when interns go above and beyond (see next section), but it’s always important to first complete the task at hand. When given a task, remember you are there to help and support the team. Your supervisor will let you know if the assignment is more black and white, or if they need to come up with some creative ideas. Refer to the previous point and always ask if you’re not sure.

Be Proactive

Yes, yes, and yes! We love when our interns are proactive and go above and beyond. However, you always want to make sure that what you’re doing is the best way to help. After you’ve finished your work, see how you can further help your supervisor. This shows us you’re a hard worker, you care about your work, and it can help you stand out from others.

Communicate

Communication is essential for success at any position at any company, unless you work by yourself in a cave. (Communication Tip: If that’s the case, you’ll probably end up talking to yourself, and you always want to make sure your message is clearly understood.)

As a TB Intern, you’ll be communicating constantly with your supervisor. If you’re unsure how to do something, communicate. If you’re going to be late one day, communicate. Not feeling well? Communicate. Have a part time job you need to get to? You guessed it…communicate!

We are here to help you succeed, but help us help you. Let us know your needs, your interests, what you like doing, what you don’t like doing. This is the best way to get the most out of your internship experience.

The moral of the story is we love helping our interns grow into more successful students, and ultimately business professionals. We have hired about 90% of our employees through our internship program because they did the above five things.
